First-Year (And Beyond) Cold Basics

Here are the things we wish someone had clued us in to for the first year. Whether you’re taking a temperature or ridding your child’s nose of snot, these are the items that will make those first few colds/illnesses a little easier.

A thermometer. First off, skip all the other types (Rectal? No way.) and go for an ear-scan version. It’s super accurate, and doesn’t strike fear in a  parent’s heart at the thought of insertion. We like this Safety 1st model.

A nasal aspirator. While you can go for the traditional squeeze-suction style, if your child suffers from a constant runny nose, the battery-operated ones are extremely quick and effective. We like this Graco version.

A warm mist humidifier. Warm mist will break up congestion. We like this Vicks germ-free model.

And finally: Boogie Wipes. We cannot say enough about these saline-infused nose wipes. They are gentle on the skin, moisturizing, and smell likes grapes (just for the kids). Tissues pale in comparison.
